How it all started! MMO's started with a textual based game started in 1974 that goes by the name of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D or DnD). D&D is a game that is based on a story pre-written, players fight against bosses and their results are based on the roll of a dice. Depending on the player roll it will point the player to a different part of the Dungeon Masters book, which was a book that has the different bosses that are faced and the "Lore" of the story.
D&D evolved into Multi User Dungeons (MUD's) with the revolution of computers. MUD's are basically the same thing as D&D but the story is online and you could connect to a server and play with friends. It was all text based so that players would read what was happening and depending on that they would type in a command. These would show up around 1975. Players results would be based on random events (RNG) and user based commands. For most of these games there were a right and wrong answer. Usually what would make these games interesting was that a players results could be affected by what their teammates/ group members did. MUD's Eventually evolved into a 2D scene that were ahead of their time the first ones appeared in 1985 and cost upwards of $14 per hour because of the price of bandwidth/internet. As technology continued to evolve eventually 3D worlds were made where players would live out the events that would have been happening in MUD's and D&D now on a character. The 3D MMO was Meridian59 which was a RPG fantasy game that was based on Player Vs. Player combat (PVP). The system in Meridian59 was not the same as most RPG's that people play today, instead of characters leveling from experience, players would advance in the game by killing non-player character's (NPC) such as boars and cows for example. |
